2nd to last Villa

 

The tiles about to go on the roof of the second to last unit at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Home in Stoke.

Originally planned and on the drawing board for 64 units 4 years ago, this picture shows the roof being finished on Unit 111. Unit 112 was the final one.

What can you say, in these fiscally difficult times, Ryman had an absolute stunner of a winner on their hands here!

Taharoa Express has done it again!

 

Only saw the land based activity but, after seeing this ex Russian Mil Mi-8MTV-1 helicopter making numerous trips outbound with mini excavators and bobcats I had a deja vu feeling?

It reminded me of the same thing that happened a few years ago and suspected it may have been another ship like last time requiring its cargo leveled. After all, at this time of year it was hardly going to be a DOC contract?

Considering this machine and another smaller personnel carrier one, both headed in the direction of Open Sea, I suspected it wasn't erecting a mobile phone tower either.

 

And sure enough, thats exactly what it was the media are reporting, in fact its exactly the same ship as last time!

Although the whole boat was required to be present, the only thing being restored was the conning tower from where the tuna fish spotters direct everyone else.

Going by the look of the 4 of them inspecting the map, their destination was......?

Could what Vin Diesel be talking about here, have something to do with it?

Helicopters were still at it.....

Reports in the paper and on the web indicate it was quite a fire, some folks being evacuated, with one home succumbing to the flames. Most of the firefighters and helicopters were working through Thursday night into Friday morning.

Aotearoa mural at Port Nelson

One of Nelson's landmarks is this mural painted by Christopher Finlayson back in the mid 1980's.
To this day its probably one of the most photographed spots in town, and as you can see from the photo she's just had a new paint job.

Nelsons only Railway Line

At Founders Park ~ there's talk of extending this line towards the centre of town ~ something I can only hope does indeed happen!

Celebrating 20 Years

Last Weekend Nelson hosted the NZ celebrations for Mazda's 20th Year Anniversary of the production of this beaut car, the MX5. Everywhere you looked last weekend you couldn't help but spot one.

Found at the Airport

An unusual sight at Nelson Airport yesterday. Has "Aero Vodochody - L39C - Albatros" written on the side of the outer wing fuel tank. UPDATE - local paper has story about it here.

Nelson Webcam Images from Takeabreak

Today is a bit of a cheat day - I haven't taken these pics myself, but have "borrowed" them from Takeabreak NZ's webcams sprinkled around Nelson.

The webcam, here, looks out in a northerly direction.

And lastly who can forget seeing the Golden Sands of Kaiteriteri for the first time. For many honeymooners from the baby boomer years this sight will bring back fond memories of a different time & place.....along with a different pace of life. This webcam's outlook is in a east south easterly direction.

Looking out over the Nelson Airport you can see the Kina Peninsula outlined fabulously by a low setting sun. Motueka lies about middle of screen far right hand side.

One of our newer subdivisions

Grampain Oaks is one of Nelson's newer suburbs as can be evidenced by the new builds you can see. The Grampians behind, make a fabulous backdrop / outlook for local residents. From memory most of these sections are already sold.

Railway Reserve

Everyone in Nelson knows about the Railway Reserve, its a path that leads from town out through Richmond and onto Brightwater. Its a throwback to when Nelson did have a train-line and a service. But that was many years ago, and now's its just a favoured pedestrian and cycleway to get around. Just recently the stretch you can view here was sealed.

When it turns to Spring and Summer in Nelson you see a bit more of this old fellow around the town.

On track in 2009 we are to win!

according to last nights paper we are 75 hours ahead in the sunshine stakes as compared to Blenheim / Marlborough. So the weather chart above is no surprise.

The Helicopters were back

...this week in droves.
This time of year around Oct / Nov the Frost Fighters as they are called are out there.
Vineyards stand to have damaged crops when unseasonally late frosts turn up. The way to combat this is with choppers.

When those trees are ready. cut them down. In the top right of the photo you'll see a logging crew harvesting what they usually do. Bottom left is The Cathedral with the Rutherford Hotel to its right front.
